About CHIP

Wisconsin AHEC’s Community Health Internship Program (CHIP) matches college students with an interest in community health to local health departments, tribal health centers, community health centers and community service organizations throughout urban and rural Wisconsin for an eight-week summer internship.

We recruit students from Wisconsin’s colleges and universities, manage and review applications, find the best fit for the student and organization, conduct background checks and basic trainings, and take care of the HR aspects of hosting an intern. We also provide weekly seminars for the students to deepen their knowledge of community health in practice.

Our host sites designate a mentor to provide technical support, project guidance, and connections to shadowing opportunities. The program would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of these community health professionals.

Past interns have engaged in projects such as program and policy development, monitoring, evaluation, research, and education. Interns gain valuable public health knowledge, skills, and experience while providing host sites with the capacity needed to strengthen and extend their practice in ways that might not otherwise be possible.
