Program Details
Our next CHIP session will run June 2 – July 25, 2025.
Wisconsin AHEC’s Community Health Internship Program (CHIP) enables college students who have an interest in community health, public health, and population health to work with local health departments, tribal health centers, community health centers, and community service organizations throughout Wisconsin for an eight-week summer internship. In addition to valuable experience within local Wisconsin communities, students also:
- gain valuable public health knowledge, skills, and experience while providing host sites with the extra capacity needed to strengthen and extend their practice
- gain an understanding and an appreciation of the broad range of public health activities undertaken at the local level
- receive a stipend based on your position type to help with living expenses over the 8-week internship experience

Application Phases and Timeline
Phases
The application process includes two phases. The Phase 1 application is an opportunity for you to tell us more about yourself, your academic and professional background, and your skills and interests. We use your responses on the Phase 1 Application to assess your eligibility and fit for CHIP as well as preliminarily match you to one of our seven Regional Centers.
Students invited to the Phase 2 application will be connected to one of our Regional AHEC Centers to learn more about the specific host site and projects available in that region. Students will have an opportunity to rank their preferences for the host site projects and may be asked to submit academic and/or professional references.

What students are saying
"My experience with the CHIP internship was greater than words can describe. I was fortunate enough to be placed within the ADRC-North in the Ashland Branch, located in Ashland, Wisconsin. While the internship was completed virtually, I gained so many great skills and was able to expand my knowledge more than I would have anticipated during this internship experience."
Elise A., CHIP Alumni
"I participated in the CHIP and Wisconsin Express Programs and loved both! I was a CHIP intern with Green County Public Health, now I work here full time!"
